DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1715Z June 24, 2007

Alaska/Yukon/Northwest Territories/northeast British Columbia/northern
Alberta/northern Saskatchewan:
The fires burning in far eastern Alaska, western Yukon Province and
northern Alberta continue to produce a large area of smoke across the
northern regions of British Columbia and Alberta, eastern Yukon and
the Northwest Territories. Moderately dense to dense smoke spreads
east from the eastern Yukon Province into the western sections of the
Northwest Territories in and between Great Bear and Great Slave Lakes.
Smoke becomes a little lighter once reaching the central Northwest
Territories. As mentioned the fires in northern Alberta are contributing
to the moderately dense to dense smoke. This smoke is moving north
into the southern/central sections of the western Northwest Territories.
Some very light smoke can be seen in eastern Alaska and western Yukon.

Minnesota/Michigan:
The area of smoke moving through the Dakotas yesterday is now moving
through central/southern Minnesota and northern/central Michigan.
The smoke is light and is getting more difficult to see.

Kansas:
A fire on the border of Stevens and Seward counties is producing a light
plume of smoke moving north across both counties.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
