DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z June 25, 2007

California/Nevada/Idaho/Montana/Utah/Wyoming/Saskatchewan:
A wildfire near South Lake Tahoe in eastern California is continuing
to produce a very large mass of dense smoke spreading to the north with
moderately dense smoke also fanning towards the northwest and northeast
into Nevada. The smoke moving northeast yesterday is now located
over parts of southeastern Idaho, northwest Wyoming, eastern Montana
and extreme northwest Utah and southern Saskatchewan. This smoke is
moderately dense with the far eastern edges becoming thin.

A large wildfire burning in the Tehachapi Mountains in southern Kern
County of southern California is emitting a dense smoke plume moving
southeast across northeast Los Angeles and western San Bernardino
counties. Light to moderately dense smoke is moving east across central
and eastern San Bernardino county and southern Nevada.

Utah/Wyoming:
A wildfire in Camp Floyd/Stagecoach State Park just west of Lake Provo
and south of Salt Lake City is producing a moderately dense plume of
smoke moving south into northeast Juab county.
A wildfire in Sublette county Wyoming is emitting a narrow moderately
dense plume of smoke moving east SE, but staying within county borders.
Both of these fires were burning yesterday.

Alaska/Yukon/Northwest Territories/Northeast British Columbia/Northern
Alberta/Northern Saskatchewan/Northern Manitoba:
Smoke is located from the Alaskan-Canadian border eastward across
Yukon Province and the Northwest Territories in northwestern Canada as
well as in northern Alberta, just west of Lake Athabasca and parts of
extreme northern edges of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. A large mass of
smoke of varying density is present across much of the Yukon and the
western portion of the Northwest Territories extending southward to the
far northern portions of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and
Manitoba. The largest fires is located in north central Yukon Province,
in the Northwest Territories around 100 miles to the west of Great Bear
Lake, and in northern Alberta Province just west of Athabasca Lake. The
smoke is moving mainly in a northerly direction initially from many of
the fires, but is turning more to the northeast and east as it moves
farther to the north.

Quebec:
A large wildfire southeast of Lab Albanel and burning over the last
couple of days is producing a moderately dense plume of smoke moving
east SE. Several other fires across Quebec are emitting smoke plume
ins a southeasterly direction.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
