DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z June 29, 2007

Wyoming:
Locally dense smoke is traveling from the Horse Creek fire to the east and
north. Remnant smoke from last night is moving in a serpentine shape to
the east with the densest area covering the eastern third of the state
and then moving into South Dakota.

Utah:
A wildfire in Sanpete county was producing moderately dense smoke
overnight. Currently this area is detached and stretches from southwestern
Wyoming, across Colorado, and into northwestern New Mexico.

Alaska:
Moderately dense smoke from fires in Valdez-Cordova County is moving
northwest into Southeast Fairbanks and Matanuska-Susitna Counties.

Northern/Central Plains:
The Northern and Central Plains are covered in thin haze that may also
contain remnant smoke from the numerous fires in the West and Canada.

Northwestern Canada:
Two fires in the Northwest Territories north of Saskatchewan are producing
locally dense smoke moving to the northwest.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
