DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z July 6, 2007

Alaska:
Numerous fires in central Alaska stretch from east central Alaska westward
through the Yukon Valley in the central interior. Smoke from these
fires is being obscured by extensive cloudiness in the region. The most
extensive smoke observed is with a fire along the Yukon near Beaver. This
dense smoke is drifting mainly to the south.

Northwest Territories:
Numerous fires are seen to the southeast of both Great Slave Lake and
Great Bear Lake. By days end all of the smoke from these fires was
drifting to the northwest. The smoke from the fires southeast of Great
Slave Lake was mainly dense while the smoke near Great Bear Lake was
moderately dense to dense. A fire between Great Bear Lake and Fort Good
Hope was producing a light to moderately dense plume that was moving to
the northeast.

Manitoba/Ontario/Northern Great Lakes:
Several blazes in northern Manitoba were producing very thick smoke that
was quickly moving to the southeast and reaching northwest Ontario along
Hudson Bay. Residual smoke from these fires was dropping south across
Lake Nippon and across east Lake Suprior. This smoke was mainly light
to moderately dense.

California:
A fire in central Santa Barbara County is producing moderately dense to
dense smoke that is fanning out to the east and the north. It stretched
from eastern San Luis Obispo through southwest Kern, northern Ventura
and eastern Santa Barbara.

Utah:
A fire near the border of Emery and Sanpete Counties is producing a
thick smoke plume that extends toward the east into much of Emery county.

Arizona:
A fire rapidly exploded in the far northwest part of Mohave county
before sunset. Clouds covered much of the region making smoke detection
difficult but it seemed there was very dense smoke in the vicinity of
the fire drifting to the west or northwest.

Montana/Idaho/Oregon:
A fire grew rapidly in southeast Flathead county Montana and was spreading
a large plume of dense smoke to the southeast reaching to Fegus and
Golden Valley counties near sunset. A blaze along the Oregon/Idaho
border in western Idaho county was spreading a plume of mainly light
smoke to the souther across eastern Wallowa county Oregon. A fire in
northern Bingham county had a plume of light to moderate smoke drifting
to the north into eastern Butte county. A fire in extreme northeast Lake
county had a plume of moderately dsense to dense smoke spreading to the
northeast covering much of Grant county and into southern Umatilla.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
