DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z July 19, 2007

California:
A fire in Santa Barbara county (Sierra Madre Mountains) is producing
light smoke moving south into the Pacific.

Nevada/Idaho/Oregon/Washington/Montana:
Light smoke from the fires in Navada and Idaho can be seen moving to the
north. Yesterday's dense smoke from this area, is now over Montana and
Alberta moving into Saskatchewan. The Northern Rockies are obsecured by
clouds this morning, but over these clouds an area of smoke and haze is
moving into Canada.

Northwest Territories/Saskatchewan/Manitoba/Ontario/Northern US:
Large wildfires north of Lake Winnipeg and east/southeast of Reindeer
Lake are currently emitting areas of locally dense smoke moving to the
east. Dense residual smoke from these fires is moving southwest along
Lake Winnipeg amd then over Lake Winnipegosis.
Large wildfires burning east of Great Slave Lake are producing an area
of moderately dense to dense smoke moving northeast into Nanavut.

Residual smoke from the numerous wildfires burning across Canada and the
US can be seen stretching from the Northwest Territories into Saskatchewan
and central/southern Manitoba moving east into the US. Smoke in the
US extends across the Dakota's, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin,
and possibly into the cloud covered areas of Illinois, Michigan and the
Great Lakes.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
