DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200 July 27, 2007

Manitoba/Saskatchewan/Ontario/Quebec/the Great Lakes:
The large fires in northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan of Canada are still
burning; however, only the smoke from the fires east of Reindeer Lake
and the fires just north of Cedar Lake are observed due to thick weather
clouds. The smoke is moving southeasterly and mixes with this morning
even yesterday night's smoke forming a large area of thin smoke which
has covered most portions of Ontario, Quebec, and the Great Lakes of US.

Idaho/Montana:
The large fires in western Idaho county along the Idaho-Oregon border
in Idaho are producing locally dense plumes of smoke that is moving
northeasterly into northern Idaho county. A fire in western Lake county
of Montana is producing a moderately dense to locally dense plume of
smoke that is moving northeasterly into southern Flathead county of
Montana. A fire in Garfield county of Washington is producing a thin
plume of smoke that is moving northerly then easterly and across Whitman
county into central Spokane county of Washington.

California:
The fire in western Siskiyou county is still producing a moderately
dense to locally dense plume of smoke that is swirling around and is
influencing northwestern Siskiyou county of California and Josephine and
Jackson counties of southern Oregon. The fire in Santa Barbara county
of southern California is still producing a thin plume of smoke that is
influencing locally.

Virginia:
A fire along Lunenburg-Mecklenburg county border is producing a thin to
moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving northward into central
Prince Edward county.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
