DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630 UTC August 5, 2007

Northwestern United States/Canada:
Large fires in southeastern British Columbia, western Montana/northern
Idaho and Oregon produced the large swath of very dense smoke that
extended eastward across southern Canada and the Northern Tier of States
to the Great Lakes. Thin smoke reached into eastern Ontario. Thin smoke
visible over northern Saskatchewan and northwestern Manitoba was caused
by fires burning northeast of Lake Athabasca. A fire in Luce County in
Upper Michigan continues to produce a narrow plume of thin and moderate
smoke that moved northward over eastern Lake Superior.

California:
Thin and moderately dense smoke extended from the fire in Santa Barbara
county to southern and central Nevada.

Eastern United States:
A large area of thin smoke and haze is visible over the Midwest, the
Southeast and the Middle Atlantic States.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
