DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z UTC August 9, 2007

Northwestern US/Southern Canada/North Central US:
Ongoing wildfires in Oregon, northern Idaho and western Montana produced
a large mass of light to very dense smoke that moved eastward across
Montana to the Northern Plains and the Upper Mississippi Valley. Some
moderate and dense smoke also pushed northward over Canada across southern
Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba to western Ontario.

California:
The persistent Zaca fire in Santa Barbara County in southern California
continues to produce very dense smoke that moved northward to southern
Tulare County.

Middle Atlantic Region/Southeast Region:
An extensive area of haze and residual smoke from the western fires
extends from southern Alabama across the Carolinas to just off the
Middle Atlantic.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
