DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z UTC August 9, 2007

Northern Plains: Ongoing wildfires from Idaho and western Montana have
produced a large area of light to moderate smoke that can be seen from
central Montana through North and South Dakota to southern Minnesota.

Southeast Region:
An extensive area of haze and residual smoke extends across the Northern
coastal Gulf of Mexico from southern Louisiana across Southern Georgia and
northern Florida to off the Atlantic coast of Virginia and North Carolina.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
