DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0207Z UTC August 14, 2007

California:
The large fires in Santa Barbara are still producing very dense plumes
of smoke that are moving northeasterly across San Luis Obispo, Kern,
Tulare, and Fresno counties into Mono county. A portion of moderately
dense smoke has already reached Mineral county of Nevada. A fire in
southern Fresno county is producing a thin to moderately dense plume of
smoke that is moving northeasterly. A fire in eastern Siskiyou county of
northern California is producing a moderately dense to locally dense plume
of smoke that is moving northeasterly into the north of western Modoc
county. A swath of moderately dense plume of smoke from the residual
smoke of the fire in Santa Barbara along the Rockie mountains formed a
north-south belt which has extended from Madera county all the way north
to southern Lassen county.

Oregon/Washington:
The big fire at the Jefferson-Marion county boundary is producing a
locally dense plume of smoke that is moving northeasterly into Klickitat
and Benton counties of southern Washington. A big fire in Chelan county
of northern Washington is producing a locally dense plume of smoke that
is moving northeasterly into Okanogan county near the US-Canada border.

Northern Rockies/Northern Plains/Upper Mississippi Valleys/the Great
Lakes/Ohio Valley/Tennessee Valley/Saskantchewan/Manitoba/Ontario:
The outrageous fires in Idaho Panhandle and western Montana are
still producing very very very dense plumes of smoke that are moving
northeasterly then easterly across the areas mentioned in the title. The
densest portion of smoke has covered Idaho Panhandle, all of Montana,
southern Saskatchewan, and all of North Dakota. All the other areas are
covered by dense smoke but not so dense as these areas.

Middle and Lower Mississippi Valleys:
There are a lot small agricultural fires were producing hourly puffs of
very thin to thin smoke that are mainly moving northward.

Eastern coast and northern Gulf of Mexico:
The residual smoke from the large fires in Idaho and Montana has formed
a area of thin smoke which covered the Atlantic along the eastern coast
and all the coast areas along northern Gulf of Mexico.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
