DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1545Z UTC August 16, 2007


California/Nevad:
The big fires in Santa Barbara are producing locally dense plumes of smoke
and the residual smoke from these fires are still very dense and it's
moving northward and has covered most portion of central California. A
small portion of the smoke across the Nevada-California boundary into
north of western Nevada.

Northern Rockies/Northern Plains/Middle Mississippi Valley/Upper Great
Lakes/Ohio Valley:
The dense to very dense smoke from the outrageous firs in Idaho Panhandle
and western Montana has covered a very broad area including Northern
Rockies, Northern Plains, Middle Mississippi Valley, Upper Great Lakes,
and Ohio Valley. The densest portion of the smoke is influencing mainly
Northern Rockies and Northern Plains.

East coast/the Atlantic/southern coast/Gulf of Mexico:
East coast, the Atlantic, southern coast, and northern Gulf of Mexico has
covered thin to moderately dense smoke from the large fires in western
US including Idaho, Montana, and California.

  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
