DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0232Z UTC August 23, 2007

Southern California/Arizona/Utah/Colorado:
The Zaca Fire in Santa Barbara County in southern California caused
extensive smoke over the Southwest. Thin smoke extended northeastward
over southern Nevada, southeastern Utah and western Colorado. Moderately
dense and very dense smoke drifted to the southeast over Ventura and
Los Angeles Counties. A blaze in southeastern Tulare County produced a
narrow plume of moderate smoke that moved eastward over southern Inyo
County. A fire in the Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona
produced a plume of thin to moderately dense smoke that extended eastward
to northern Navajo County. Moderately dense smoke plumes from fires in
Utah and western Colorado also moved northeastward. Some of the thin
smoke over southwestern Arizona originated with the fires in northern
Baja California.

Idaho:
Fires in northwestern Blaine County and northwestern Idaho County produced
light to moderately dense smoke that drifted to the southeast.

Southeastern United States:
A large area of thin smoke and haze is visible over the Gulf States,
the Carolinas and off the Middle Atlantic Coast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
