DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z UTC August 24, 2007

California/Arizona:
Large fires in Santa Barbara County and northwestern Ventura County in
southern California are causing extensive smoke that spread northeastward
to southern Utah. Moderately dense and very dense smoke drifted over
Kern County. Other fires producing thin smoke are also in southeastern
Tulare County, northwestern Tuolumne County and Yuba County. The thin
smoke over central and southern Arizona originated from the large fires
in northern Baja California. A blaze in the Grand Canyon National park
in northern Arizona produced moderately dense smoke that moved eastward
over northern Navajo County.

Northwest United States:
Although diminished, fires in the Northwest continue to produce light
and moderately dense smoke that moved mostly to the southeast. The most
dense smoke occurred over central ad southeastern Idaho.

Southeastern United States:
An area of residual thin smoke and haze extends from the northeastern Gulf
of Mexico across northern Florida to the Atlantic off the Southeast Coast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
