DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0155Z August 30, 2007

Idaho/Montana/Washington/Oregon:
Numerous fires in central Idaho, northwestern Wyoming and western Montana
produced moderately dense to very dense smoke that extended eastward
across Montana/NE Wyoming to South Dakota. Less dense smoke extended
farther east to northern Iowa. Fires in northern Chelan County in
northwestern Washington caused mostly thin smoke that drifted northward.

California:
A large blaze in eastern Tulare County produced thin and moderately
dense smoke that extended northward across Inyo County to western Nevada.

Southeastern United States:
Thin remnant smoke and haze were observed over the Carolinas and northern
Florida.

Hawaii:
Lava flow from Kilauea moving into vegetated areas caused light smoke
that moved westward across southern Hawaii.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
