DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z September 03, 2007

Eastern Great Lakes:
A narrow strip of thin smoke could be seen moving due east across Lake
Erie, Ontario into the St. Lawrence River Valley, specifically from
Cleveland, OH to Montreal, QC. The plume is about 120km wide at its
widest across Central NY. This smoke is remnant of the MT/ID fire output
over the last few days.

S MI/NW IN:
A very narrow strip of thin smoke can be seen extending between Layfette,
IN to Detroit, MI. At its widest is about 20km wide and is also from
prior fire emissions from MT/ID.

Upper Great Plains and Upper Great Lakes:
Thin to moderate smoke from yesterday's output from the MT/ID/WY fires
is rounding the top of a tilted upper level ridge (that reaches from WY
to E ND). The smoke from ND then turns due south across MN/N IA when
it consolidates along the trof/cold frontal zone that extends from the
large cyclone over the Lower Hudson Bay across NE Onartio, to the UP of
MI across all of WI, to IA and back to NE (similar to a large checkmark
or square root symbol). Each section is moving differntly due to speed
of flow...but across ND it is east then turns SE into MN/IA. Flow within
the frontal zone across ON/MI/WI is very quickly moving smoke E, while
smoke that the end of the zone over NE/IA is pretty stationary.

ID/MT:
The large complexes across MT/ID continue to produce very dense smoke that
is moving Neward covering all of Idaho, Valley and NW Lemhi counties with
the Grey's Creek fire covering much of southern and east- central Adams
county as well. The dense smoke continues NE into MT covering all of
the eastern ridges of the Rockies out to 110.5W and to the Canada boarder.

WY/SE MT:
The large fire on the Western slopes of the Northern Bighorn Mtns in WY
continue to produce moderate to dense smoke that extend 135km E to the
Sheridan/Cambell county line covering all of Sheridan county. Yesterday
and this mornings thin to moderate smoke had moved NE from the fire into
NE WY and SE MT and can currently be seen covering N Campbell county WY,
Powder River and Carter counties in MT.

Oregon/Washington:
The GW fire is producing dense smoke that extends NE and is beginning
to diverge in the upper flow toward the E and SE as downslope winds
are fanning the smoke out (including a nice southern rotor seen over N
Deschutes county. The fan of dense smoke extends 350km NE to NE Franklin
county WA, extends E 170km to the Grant/Wheeler county line covering
all of Wheeler county, and extends SE 103km along the Deschuetes/Crook
county line.

Nevada:
A small fire near the Pershing/Washoe/Humboldt county line in Washoe
county produced a small puff of thin smoke that moved due east into SE
Humboldt county over the Black Rock Desert.

California:
The Yolla Bolly Complex in S Trinity county is producing a thin fan of
smoke that is covering the northern portions of the valley across all
of Shasta county.
A small near fire area of thin to moderate smoke can be seen near the
Wallow fire in central Trinity county.

Kansas:
A fire near Coats in SW Pratt county is producing moderately dense puffs
of smoke that are low level and moving due north as much as 70km into
SE Pawnee county.

Oklahoma:
Very thin puffs of smoke could be seen moving N and NW across
north-central OK from multiple agricultural fires.

Alaska:
The fire just SW of Fort Yukon the southern branch of the Yukon River
is producing thin smoke that is drifting around the area, though mainly
south and southeast along the river.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
