DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z September 03, 2007

Pacific Northwest and Northern Plains:
Smoke from the ongoing fires in Idaho and Montana covers the panhandle
of Idaho and much of central and eastern Montana before extending into
North Dakota as well as extreme southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Upper Midwest and Great Lakes:
A large area of light smoke covers extreme eastern South Dakota,
southern Minnesota, northern Iowa and Illinois, southern Wisconsin and
lower Michigan.

Lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys:
Light smoke and smog extend from southern Missouri and northern Arkansas,
to the east across Kentucky and Tennessee to the southern Appalachians.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
