DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z September 04, 2007

Northern Plains/Northern Rockies/Southern Canada:
Wildfires in Idaho and western Montana have produced an area of thick
smoke moving east across southern Canada and the northern Plains.
The smoke can be seen stretching across parts of southeastern Alberta
and southern Saskatchewan and parts of eastern Montana into north and
western sections of North Dakota. Smoke has began to move into parts of
southwestern Manitoba. Light to moderately dense smoke stretches into
central/eastern North Dakota and into northern Minnesota and southern
Manitoba (central/eastern sections). Smoke is beginning to become
more visible in Idaho as clouds continue to move north NE and out of
the region.

An area of moderately dense smoke can be seen moving north from Wyoming
into southern Montana and southwestern North Dakota. The smoke is from
wildfires burning in northern Wyoming.

Central/Southern Plains/Lower/Middle Mississippi Valley/Ohio Valley:
An area of moderately dense smoke can be seen moving north across eastern
Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri and into parts of southern/central Iowa,
most of Illinois and then moving east into Indiana. Light smoke stretches
across parts of central Oklahoma, Kansas and north into central Nebraska.
Light smoke is also detected in southeast South Dakota, northern/central
Iowas and southern Minnesota/Michigan. The smoke is most likely from
the numerous agricultural/prescribed fires burning across central
Oklahoma/Kansas, central Arkansas and southern Missouri

California/Nevada:
A fire on the Lassen/Plumas county border in the Plumas National Forest
is producing an area of moderately dense to dense smoke moving west
across Lassen county and into the county of Washoe in northwest Nevada.

An area of moderately dense smoke is seen moving across central California
and into part of western Nevada. The northern edge of the smoke just
moved east of the Lake Tahoe region with the southern edge on the eastern
edge of the San Joaquin Valley.

A fire in eastern Santa Clara county is emitting a narrow plume of smoke
moving southeast across the county and into Merced.

A fire on the border of Tehama and Trinity counties (Trinity National
Forest) is emitting a narrow plume of smoke moving east across central
Tehama county.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
