DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 06, 2007

California/Nevada:
The Moonlight fire in N Plumas county is producing extremely dense smoke
that has been generally moving to the south-southwest into the Sacramento
Valley and into the San Francisco Bay area. South of San Francisco the
smoke merges with another dense smoke plume from the Lick fire along the
Santa Clara/Stanislaus county line. The smoke continues south through
the San Joaquin Valley and reaches as far as Santa Barbara county. The
smoke area also spills out into the Pacific from Santa Barbara county
north through Monterey and San Francisco.

A spoke of dense smoke that reaches higher into the atmosphere and came
from the Moonlight fire was seen racing to the southeast and tracked
over Lake Tahoe and Walker Lake. Additional moderate to dense smoke,
which is a mix of smoke from the Moonlight fire in California and the
numerous blazes in Idaho, covered the northern two thirds of Nevada.

Idaho/Oregon/Montana/N Utah/Washington:
Dense to very dense smoke from numerous fires in southern Idaho,
Valley, western Lemhi, western Custer and Boise counties in Idaho was
circulating around a large upper level storm over southwest Idaho. The
smoke covered the southeast quarter of Oregon, northern Nevada, northwest
Utah, the southern two thirds of Idaho and much of western and central
Montana. Additional light to moderate smoke was being added to the mix
from numerous short duration fires along the Washington/Idaho border
region of Whitman county Washington and Benewah and Latah counties in
Idaho and over Nez Perce and Lewis counties in Idaho. This smoke was
drifting to the east.

A fire in northern Chelan county in Washington had a narrow plume of
smoke moving to the southeast but still within Chelan county.

A blaze in northwest Deschutes county Oregon had a moderately dense
plume that extended to the east and then curled south.

Fires in southeast Flathead county Montana were producing mainly narrow
plumes of smoke that were moving to the east.

Eastern Mississippi Valley and western Great Lakes:
Thin to moderate smoke covered a broad area that was mainly east of the
Mississippi River from Mississippi and Alabama north into Wisconsin and
western Michigan. This is remnant smoke from the western fires mixed
with the numerous agricultural fires that have been noted in the Plains
and mid-Mississippi Valley over the past several days.

Eastern Great Lakes to the Mid-Atlantic:
Thin to moderate smoke covered much of Pennsylvania, the Delmarva and
and just of the Atlantic coast down to Virginia Beach. This is remnant
smoke from the western fires.

Additionally, fires in extreme northwest Hanover, northern Lunengerg
and Charles City in Virginia were producing moderate plumes of smoke
that were mainly drifting to the northeast.

Alaska:
Two fires are seen burning near Fort Yukon in eastern Alaska. They are
producing light to moderate smoke which is moving little and mainly to
the east.

Hawaii:
Smoke is still mixing in with the vog from the volcano on the Big Island
as lava moves through vegetated areas. This mix of smoke and vog is moving
to the west and hugs the south coast of Big Island and then extends at
least 300 km to the west of the Island.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
