DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 07, 2007

Idaho/Montana/Wyoming/Nebraska/South Dakota:
Numerous fires continue over central Idaho in Idaho, Valley and southwest
Lemhi counties in central Idaho. The smoke is not as extensive as in
previous days and is mainly confined to areas east of the fires up to
the Montana border. Additional fires in southeast Flathead and northwest
Lewis and Clark counties in Montana are likely producing smoke but this
is obscured by cloud cover.

A large number of fires in the agricultural areas of northwest Idaho in
Kootenai, Benewah, Nez Perce and Lewis counties and in northeast Whitman
county Washington have produced an area of thin smoke that drifted to
the east.

An area of thin to locally moderate remnant smoke was seen moving quickly
out of southeast Wyoming and into Nebraska and extreme southwest South
Dakota by sunset.

Washington:
A fire in northern Chelan county produced a plume of thin to moderate
smoke that drifted to the southeast and remained within Chelan county.

Oregon:
Fires in northwest Deschutes and central Jefferson county were producing
light to moderate smoke that was moving south and covered much of
Deshutes county.

California/Nevada:
The massive fires in Plumas and Santa Clara counties are producing
desnse to very dense smoke that covers much of the central Valley, the
San Francisco Bay area and the areas east of Plumas county into western
Nevada. The smoke also extends off the coast into the Pacific. Lighter
smoke was also seen extending eastward across the Sierra Nevada into
southwest Nevada.

Smaller fires in southeast Trinity and southern Tuolumne counties were
also producing smoke which was contributing to the whole mass of smoke
in the region.

Eastern Great Lakes/New England/Mid Atlantic:
Residual smoke from the western fires is still lingering over this
broad area and has mixed with haze. The area is becoming more diffuse
and generally thinner. The area is mainly east of the Appalachians and
Ohio and extends off the coast. The thickest area is along and off the
coast from North Carolina to New England.

Hawaii:
Smoke continues to mix with vog over the Big Island due to lava initiated
fires. The smoke/vog mix is seen extending to the west along the south
coast of the Big Island and then west from South Point over the open
Pacific.

Alaska:
An area of smoke from fires near Fort Yukon was seen drifting mainly to
the east and crossed into the Yukon Territory.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
