DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z September 08, 2007

California/Nevada:
A wildfire on the border of Santa Clara and Stanislaus counties (Henry
W. Coe State Park) is producing an area of thick smoke moving north into
San Joaquin, Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, Napa and Sonoma counties. From
this fire light smoke is fanning south with residual smoke as far south
as 225 km from the source. Moderately dense smoke is moving north into
northern California with the most eastern smoke edge combining with
smoke from the Plumas National Forest wildfire.

The wildfire in Lassen and Plumas counties (Plumas National Forest)
is producing an area of very thick smoke moving east into northern
and western sections of Nevada. Moderately dense smoke is moving into
central sections of northern Nevada. An area of thick smoke is located
in eastern Nevada and extends east into northern Utah crossing over the
Great Salt Lake.

Oregon/Washington
A wildfire in the Deschutes National Forest (Deschutes county) is
emitting a light to moderately dense area of smoke moving south into
northern Lake and Klamath counties.
To the north and on the border of Jefferson and Wasco counties a fire
is producing a light smoke plume moving south into Deschutes and Crook
counties.

In Washington State a fire in Yakima county is producing an area of
moderately dense smoke moving south SE. Smoke is staying within the
county border based on latest satellite imagery.

Idaho/Montana/Utah/Washington:
Wildfires in central Idaho are producing an area of moderately dense to
dense smoke moving east into southwest Montana. Light smoke is reaching
south central Montana and northwest Wyoming.

Numerous fires in the agricultural areas of northwest Idaho in
Kootenai, Benewah and Lewis counties and in northeast Whitman county
Washington are producing an area of thin smoke moving slowly east.

Northeast/Mid Atlantic:
Residual smoke from the western US wildfires continues to linger along the
east coast and is mixed with haze. The area is becoming more diffuse and
generally thinner. The smoke extends south from just north of Maine to
northern and eastern sections of Virginia with possible smoke reaching
northeast North Carolina. Smoke extends into western Pennsylvania and
New York and east into the Atlantic.

Hawaii:
A fire on north Maui Island is producing a narrow plume of smoke extending
west and reaching the southern section of Lanai Island.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
