DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0135Z September 12, 2007

Alaska:
The bright fires in the central North Slope, north of the Brooks Range,
are producing moderately dense to locally dense plumes of smoke that
are moving northward.

Washington/Oregon/Idaho/Montana/Wyoming/South Dakota:
The large fires in central Idaho, Jefferson county of Oregon, and Ferry,
Chelan, and Kittitas counties of northern Washington are producing
moderately dense to locally very dense plumes of easterly smoke which
has covered a large area from central Washington and Oregon to central
South Dakota. The most dense portion of the smoke is now influencing
central Idaho and western Montana.

Alberta/Manitoba/North Dakota/Minnesota:
A fire in southern Alberta is producing a thin to moderately dense plume
of smoke that is moving easterly across the Alberta-Saskatchewan border
into southwestern Saskatchewan. A lot of fires in southern Manitoba
just south of Lake Winnipeg are producing a thin to moderately dense
plumes of smoke that are moving southerly across the US-Canada border
into northern North Dakota and northern Minnesota.

California/Nevada/Utah/Wyoming/Colorado:
The big fires in the Plumas National Forest of northern Plumas county
in northeastern California are producing locally dense plumes of smoke
that are mainly moving easterly with the most dense portion of the smoke
influencing northern half California. The fire in southern Lincoln
county of southwestern Wyoming is producing a locally dense plume of
smoke that is also moving to the east with the most dense portion of
the smoke influencing the southwestern Wyoming. Moreover, the residual
smoke from both fires are nor formed a large area which has covered
northern California, northern Nevada, northern Utah, southern Wyoming,
and northern Colorado. A fire in southern Ventura county of southern
California is producing a moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving
easterly into central of southern Ventura county.

Missouri/Kentucky/Tennessee/Arkansas:
Many fires in southeastern corner of Missouri near Mississippi river
are producing thin to moderately dense plumes of smoke that are moving
southerly into the intersection of Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, and
Arkansas four states boundary.

Kansas/Oklahoma:
Many fires in southern Kansas and northern Oklahoma are producing
moderately dense plumes of smoke that are mainly moving southward and
influencing locally.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
