DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z September 13, 2007

Northern Rockies/Inter-Mountain West/North and Central Plains/Upper and
Lower Mississippi Valley:
The wildfires burning in central Idaho continue to produce a large areas
of smoke moving east and reaching all the way to Wisconsin. An area
of thick smoke spreads east into southwest Montana while moderately
dense smoke spreads into central/eastern Montana, most of Wyoming and
extends into the western North Dakota, western/central South Dakota and
northwest Nebraska. Light smoke extends from central North Dakota through
most of eastern South Dakota and most of Nebraska and northern Kansas.
This smoke is also moving east. Lighter smoke extends across Minnesota
and Iowa and has extended into western Wisconsin and Illinois.

California/Nevada/Utah/Oregon/Northwest Utah:
The wildfire in the Plumas National Forest of northern Plumas county
continues to send smoke north and northeast into northern Nevada,
southern Oregon and Idaho. The wildfire is currently emitting moderately
dense smoke towards the northeast into northwest Nevada. Lighter smoke
extends into southern Oregon and Idaho.

In northern California in the county of Glenn (just south of the town
of Willow), a fire is producing an area of moderately dense smoke moving
north into Butte and Tehama counties.

In southern California and northern Baja California, wildfires are
producing moderately dense to dense smoke. In San Diego county the thick
smoke extends east into Riverside and Imperial counties. In northern
Baja the moderately dense smoke is moving north to northeast into San
Diego and Imperial counties.

Northwest Territories/Northeast British Columbia/Northwest Alberta:
An area of moderately dense smoke extends from just south of Great Bear
Lake south to west of Great Slave Lake and into northeast British Columbia
and moving east into northwest Alberta. The source of the smoke is most
likely from the large wildfire in northern Alaska.

Washington:
A fire in southern Ferry county (Okanogan National Forest) is producing
moderately dense to dense smoke spreading south SE into Okanogan, Douglas,
Lincoln and Grant counties. Another fire on the border of Douglas and
Grant counties and also in the Okanogan National Forest is emitting an
area of moderately dense smoke southeast into Grant, Adams, Lincoln,
Franklin, Whitman and Spokane counties.

Oregon:
Multiple fires in Linn, Marion, Lane, Jefferson and Grant counties
are emitting light to moderately dense plumes of smoke moving east to
southeast in direction. Most of these fires were not there yesterday.
Arizona/Utah:
In Arizona, fires in Coconino and Yavapai counties are producing light
to moderately dense plumes of smoke moving mostly easterly in direction.
In Utah fires in Wash and Kane counties are emitting light to moderately
dense smoke plumes moving east.

Southeast Missouri:
Numerous prescribe/agricultural fires are producing a moderately dense
plume of smoke swirling around southeast Missouri. These fires have
been popping up all day long and smoke has gotten thicker with time.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
