DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1515Z September 17, 2007

Idaho/Montana/South Central Canada/Northern Plains:
The large fires in Idaho and western Montana continue producing massive
amounts of very dense smoke that is moving throughout Montana and into
southern Saskatchewan/Manitoba and northern North Dakota.

There is also residual smoke from these fires yesterday that is seen
moving across Ontario, the Great Lakes Region and into Quebec.

California:
There is still a fine hot spot located on the fire in San Bernardino
but only light smoke can be seen in current visible imagery. There is
more then likely residual smoke mixed in with the clouds over the west
central United States.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
