DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0202Z September 19, 2007

Western United States:
Extensive cloudiness over the Northwest makes it difficult to detect
possible smoke from the large wildfires in central Idaho, western
Montana and portions of Wyoming. Fires in southern White Pine County
and northeastern Nye County in eastern Nevada caused small plumes of
moderate smoke that extended to the northeast. A fire near Drake in
southern Coconino County in Arizona produced a narrow plume of moderate
smoke that extended northward.

Southeast United States:
Numerous fires across the Gulf States produced light and moderate smoke
that moved mostly in a westward direction. These fires are probably
agricultural burns. A cluster of agricultural burns in southeastern
Missouri, southwestern Kentucky and southern Illinois produced light to
moderately dense smoke that drifted northward along the Illinois/Missouri
border.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
