DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z September 30, 2007

California:
Several fires in Colusa County and southeastern Glenn County are producing
light to moderate smoke that extends southward. This smoke can be seen
at least as far south as Contra Costa and San Joaquin Counties.

Southeastern U.S. and neighboring areas:
Numerous agricultural burns are occurring in the southeastern states
as well as the southern Plains, southern Mid-Atlantic states and also
Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky. Some of these fires have plumes large
enough to see in GOES or NOAA polar imagery and the plumes are mostly
light to moderate smoke. In the Atlantic coastal states, the smoke
plumes tend to extend southward or southwestward, while closer to the
southcentral U.S. the plumes extend westward or northward. Particularly
prominent plumes can be found in De Soto County, Louisiana, Washington
County, North Carolina and near the border of Choctaw, Marengo and Clarke
Counties in Alabama.

Saskatchewan and Manitoba:
There are many agricultural fires in southern and central Saskatchewan
and Manitoba but partial cloud cover is hindering any smoke detection
at this time.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
