DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z October 05, 2007

Great Lakes:
An area of very light residual smoke extending from SE Wisconsin to Lake
Erie is probably from the agricultural burns in the Lower Mississippi
Valley and the Central Plains.

South Central Canada/North Dakota:
Numerous fires were detected through the breaks in the clouds over North
Dakota, SE Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba. A few plumes of light
smoke could be seen drifting to the southeast in Canada.

Kansas:
Puffs of light smoke moved northward from the scattered fires in western
Kansas.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
