DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z October 06, 2007

Hawaii:
A probable smoke plume or smoke mixed with volcanic steam begins just
north of Kilauea and extends westward along the southern coast of the
big island of Hawaii. The smoke is of moderate density and is probably
the result of lava burning vegetation.

Continental U.S.
There are no large areas of smoke visible in GOES satellite imagery.
Fires producing fairly small plumes of mostly light smoke have been
observed in York County in Maine, Hutchinson County in Texas, and near
the border of Beaver and Millard Counties in Utah.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
