DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0315Z OCTOBER 11, 2007

Arizona:
Fires continue to burn in southern and south central Coconino
County. Light to moderate smoke is coming from at least three fire
areas and the plumes extend toward the northeast reaching neighboring
Navajo County.

Utah:
A small plume of light smoke extends northward from a fire in San
Juan County. Also, a fire in Rich County has light to moderate smoke
extending to the northeast.

Plains:
Although there are numerous agricultural burns especially in the southern
plains, there are few smoke plumes large enough to see in GOES imagery.
However a fire in Pennington County, South Dakota is producing a plume
of light smoke that extends northward and a fire in southwestern Kansas
is producing a plume of moderate smoke that extends northward.

Missouri and Arkansas:
There are numerous agricultural burns in southeastern Missouri.
Some have light plumes extending toward the southeast. Also a fire in
St. Clair County, Missouri has a narrow plume of light smoke extending
southeastward. There are numerous fires scattered throughout much of
Arkansas especially eastern and southern Arkansas. Many of these fires
have observable smoke plumes. Light or moderate smoke plumes extend
southeastward or southward from these fires.

Southeastern U.S.
Numerous agricultural burns continue to be seen in most of the southeast.
Fires large enough to produce smoke can be seen in satellite imagery in
South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Most of
the smoke plumes are fairly small and consist of light or light to
moderate smoke. The plumes extend southward in Louisiana and Mississippi,
southeastward in Alabama and Georgia, and eastward in South Carolina.

British Columbia:
There are many fires in central and southern British Columbia but
cloud cover is hindering smoke detection. The few plumes that can
be seen consist of mostly light smoke and extend mostly northward
or northeastward.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
