DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z November 17, 2007

Louisiana/Texas:

A fire along the coast in Vermilion County produced a moderately dense
plume that moved slowly north and then northeast. Early in the day
residual moderately dense smoke from this blaze was observed extending
westward to near the Texas coast.

Residual light smoke believed to be from a fire along the coast in
St. Mary County was tracked westward across the northwest Gulf of Mexico
during the day. By nightfall the northern boundary of this smoke plume
was approaching the extreme northeastern coast of Texas.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
