DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z November 26, 2007

Southern California:
Both the fire and the associated smoke activity from the wildfires burning
in southwest Los Angeles county (Malibu area) have been obscured by mid
and high level clouds from approaching weather system.

Southwest Oregon:
A large cluster of fires was evident this evening over southern Coos,
northern Curry and southwestern Douglas counties. The smoke plumes from
this activity congealed into a large smoke plume that extends from the
point sources mostly off to the west and southwest. The plume was mostly
moderate in density with some localized areas of high density smoke.
Further to the north, more isolated fire activity was located over
northwest Douglas and western Lane counties. A low density smoke plume
extended southwestward from this activity to about 60 miles offshore.

Southwest Washington and Northwest Oregon:
A fire along the northern banks of the Columbia River in south central
Wahkiakum county was producing a low density smoke plume that extended
west-southwestward to near the mouth of the Columbia River and then
further offshore.

Hawaii:
Fires near the vicinity of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park were producing
mostly low density smoke with some isolated areas of moderate density
smoke that was drifting southwest along the southeast shores of the Big
Island to near Green Sand Beach. The smoke plume then extended from
Green Sand Beach to approximately 50-75 miles offshore.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
