DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z December 09, 2007

Southeast US:
Numerous fires were detected on satellite imagery this evening
over the southern two-thirds of Georgia and southern South Carolina.
There appeared to be several smoke plumes that were emanating from this
fire activity that were mostly drifting on a east-northeast heading.
All of the smoke plumes were very ill defined with only very low density
smoke plumes.

Louisiana/Southeast Texas:
An earlier fire over southeastern Vernon parish produced a large and
high density smoke plume that was lifting rapidly to the north-northeast
around sunset. The highest density smoke was located from northwestern
Rapides parish into the western two-thirds of Grant parish.

Other localized fire activity over the region exhibited several smoke
plumes that were mostly drifting anywhere between westerly and northerly.
All of the smoke plumes were mostly low density smoke with some isolated
areas of moderate density smoke.

Oregon:
A fire along the southern banks of the Columbia River, just east of
Astoria in Clatsop county, appeared to have a smoke plume that was
drifting west towards the Astoria area.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
