DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z December 17, 2007

Southern US:
No significant smoke/dust seen across the US, but there are some minor
fires burning across Louisiana and Texas.

In Matagorda, Jefferson, Refugio, Calhoun, Aransas, Cameron and
Willacy counties in Texas and Iberia, St. Mary, Pointe Coupee,
Iverville, Terrebonne, Lafourche, Assumption, St. James, St. John the
Baptist and St. Charles counties in Louisiana minor fires (most likely
prescribe/agricultural) are producing only light plumes of smoke moving
south in direction.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
