DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z January 2, 2008

Southern and Southeastern US:
More than a dozen very long narrow smoke plumes of relatively thin density
were observed during the day moving mainly in a southerly direction
from fires scattered across the southern and southeastern states from
southeastern Texas to the central Florida Panhandle. Brisk northerly winds
were blowing the smoke plumes very long distances and in many cases out
over the Gulf of Mexico. A few plumes from the fires in southeastern Texas
and southern Louisiana extended at least 200 miles from their sources.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
