DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 00Z January 3, 2008

Southern Louisiana and Southeast Texas:
About a dozen or so smoke plumes were detected by the analyst, including
a couple of moderately dense smoke plumes. These very long and narrow
smoke plumes were being blown to the south, and out over the Gulf of
Mexico, by strong northerly winds. Some plumes extended 150-200 miles
from their sources.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
