DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z January 7, 2008

Florida Panhandle:
A moderately dense smoke plume was observed over Okaloosa County earlier
this afternoon moving north, and extending roughly 45 miles from the
source, into Covington and Coffee Counties in Alabama. Later this
afternoon, the smoke plume merged with two other lightly dense smoke
plumes in Santa Rosa County in Florida, resulting in a larger area of
smoke, which also moved north.

Southern Texas/Northern Mexico:
Possible patches of blowing dust were observed moving to the northwest
across extreme northeastern Mexico into far southern Texas.

Northern Mexico/Western Texas:
A swath of blowing dust from a source region in far north-central Mexico
was detected moving to the east-northeast into western Texas just south
of El Paso.

Hawaii:
Lightly dense vog produced from Kilauea is moving west-southwest as of
late afternoon. Within this region of vog, some smoke may be mixed in
due to lava flows burning vegetation.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
