DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2245Z January 15, 2008

Texas Panhandle/E New Mexico:
A large fire south of Clovis New Mexico (around 17-18Z) produced a
plume of thin smoke that has rapidly moved NE across the TX panhandle
and can currently be seen extending from Borger, TX to Perry, TX in a
22km wide line.

Elsewhere...Small smoke plumes could be seen across GA and S AL through
breaks in the clouds...but cannot be seen at this time. A small puff of
smoke was seen with a fire in Kansas, between Pratt and Medicine Lodge,
but quickly became too faint to detect.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
