DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z January 18, 2008

New Mexico/Texas:
A fire in northeastern Lea County of southeastern New Mexico produced
a thin to moderately dense smoke plume which moved eastward into Yoakum
County of western Texas.

Arizona:
Generally thin smoke spread out mainly to the southwest and also to a
lesser extent to the northeast from a fire in northwestern Gila County
of central Arizona.

Southern California/Baja/Gulf of California:
Fires scattered across the area south and southeast of the Salton Sea in
Imperial County of southern California and in northeastern Baja California
were emitting brief puffs of smoke which quickly spread southward. Also,
some blowing dust/sand was noted in visible imagery moving southward
across the northern Gulf of California from source regions in extreme
northwestern Mexico, just southwest of the Arizona border.

Hawaii:
A rather long ribbon of possible smoke was again observed moving to the
west-southwest from the Kilauea Volcano. The possible smoke was believed
to be due to lava flows burning vegetation.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
