DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1715Z January 30, 2008

Central Texas:
An extensive area of blowing dust is moving south, however it is possible
that some smoke is mixed in from the grass fires which occurred in
northern Texas and Oklahoma yesterday evening. The dust and possible
smoke extended from near Midland and about 260 miles to the east near
Sunrise. The area of dust quickly moved south to the Big Bend area.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
