THROUGH 1645Z January 31, 2008

Texas:
Blowing dust/sand was seen again this morning across portions of western
into central Texas. By late morning the dust extended from roughly
Glasscock and Reagan counties east of Midland eastward to McCulloch and
Comanche counties. The area of dust was quickly moving to the southeast.

Eastern Gulf of Mexico:
A fire on the northwest coast of Cuba about 35 km west of Havana was
producing a narrow plume of thin smoke that extended about 50 km to the
northwest into the Gulf.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
