DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0315Z February 12, 2008

North Carolina:
In extreme northwest Camden County, a heavy smoke plume ia spotted
moving east across the county. The smoke plume becomes medium in density,
and extends 80 miles from the source, as it reaches Dare County to the
south. Light smoke from the fire is moving offshore to the south, and
some of the plume is moving east as well, some 300 miles from the source.

Georgia:
Along the Chatham and Bryan County lines, a medium smoke plume is moving
southeast into the rest of Bryan County. Some of the smoke plume, much
lighter in density however, is moving northward due to a wind shift in
the afternoon, into Chatham County and extreme southern South Carolina.

Florida Panhandle:
A medium smoke plume in southeastern Liberty County is moving to the
northwest and extends 10 miles from the source. The lighter smoke however
extends 50 miles to the northwest from the source.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
