DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1715Z February 12, 2008

North Carolina:
The fire in extreme northwest Camden County in the Great Dismal Swamp
continues to burn and a hotspot is detected in satellite imagery. However,
even though a smoke plume is still likely being produced, extensive
cloudiness is precluding smoke detection.

South Carolina:
A fire in Barnwell county near Snelling is producing a light to moderate
smoke plume that is extending about 40km to the north into Aiken county.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
