DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1745Z February 18, 2008

Western Texas:
A explosion/fire at a oil refinery plant in Howard county Texas (town
of Big Spring) has produced an area of dense smoke that is moving east
NE across the county. Moderately dense smoke from the explosion/fire
continues to move farther eastward into northern Mitchell and southern
Scurry counties in western Texas. Smoke extends 80-90 km from the source
of the explosion/fire.

No other significant smoke/dust can be seen across the rest of the US
at this time.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
