DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z February 22, 2008
Large areas of cloudiness across portions of the US (especially over the South and Southeast) greatly limited fire and smoke detection in satellite imagery. Texas: A few fires were detected in the southern and western parts of Texas with smoke observed from at least 3 of these fires in visible satellite imagery. A fire in McMullen County of south central Texas emitted a moderately dense smoke plume which moved eastward during the afternoon. Hawaii: Early in the day, the possible smoke plume mixed with the usual volcanic steam/fog from the Kilauea Volcano moved to the west-southwest along the southern coast of the island of Hawaii. Later in the morning and afternoon, the possible plume appeared to move primarily to the northwest and inland across the southeastern portion of the island. Any smoke present was believed to be due to lava flows encountering and burning vegetation. JS
