DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1615Z February 28, 2008

Texas:
GOES-West visible imagery this morning with the favorable low sun
angle showed an area of possible thin smoke moving to the northeast
across eastern Texas toward southwestern Arkansas and northwestern
Louisiana. The smoke appeared to be the thickest between Houston and
College Station. More information on the forecast smoke can be found at...

Southern and Southeastern US:
Other hotspots associated with fires were beginning to appear in satellite
imagery across the southern and southeastern portions of the country,
but very little smoke could be seen as of yet in visible satellite
imagery at the present time. More smoke will likely be visible later in
the afternoon as the fires become more numerous and the lower sun angle
becomes more favorable with GOES-East visible imagery.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
