DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z March 8, 2008

Hawaii:
A mix of light to moderately thick gas, vog and smoke is seen extending
west of the Big Island. This mixture is mainly in a 100 km wide band
between 18.5N and 20N and extends at least 325km west of the southwest
coast of the Big Island.

Kansas:
A fire in west central Kearny county had a locally dense smoke plume
close to the source of the fire which thinned out as the plume drifted
to the south across Grant and into Stevens county. A narrow plume of thin
smoke in central Pawnee county extended to the south into Edwards county.

Texas:
Fires in Goliad county and the Matagorda Island Wildlife Management area
produced plumes of light smoke that drifted to the southeast out over
the western Gulf of Mexico.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
