DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z March 15, 2008

Southwest Texas:
A large fire in northwest Terrell county is producing an area of light to
moderately dense smoke moving south into northwest Brewster county. In
north central Val Verde county a fire is emitting light smoke south
into northern Mexico. On the border of La Salle and Dimmit counties a
large fire is producing light to moderately dense smoke moving south into
Zapata and Webb counties and now reaching northern Mexico. In southeast
La Salle county light smoke is emitting from a fire. The smoke is moving
into Zapata and Webb counties and combining with the smoke from the fire
on the La Salle and Dimmit county border.

Gulf of Mexico:
An area of sand/dust and residual smoke from fires burning across Texas is
moving across parts of the Gulf of Mexico. The first area stretches along
the Texas and Louisiana coast and continues to move towards the east.
Another area extends from the southwest Gulf of Mexico region northeast
to the Mississippi, Alabama and Florida Panhandle border region.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
