DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0225Z, April 3, 2008

Kansas:
An extremely large number of agricultural fires took place today in the
east-central part of the state. With that in mind, there were between
15-20 light smoke plumes observed by the analyst. These plumes were
moving in a northwest fashion, and some plumes extended as far out as
100 miles from their sources of origin.

Kentucky:
Along the border of McCreary and Whitney Counties, a heavy smoke plume
was spotted moving southwest and extended out 20 miles from the source.

Oregon:
In Lake County, a moderately dense smoke plume was seen moving to the
southeast at a fast pace, and extended out at least 50 miles from the
source. In Harney County, a moderately dense smoke plume was seen moving
to the southeast as well. However, this smoke plume became much lighter
in density as it moved into neighboring Malheur County.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
