DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0030Z April 9, 2008

Louisiana/Mississippi:
A fire in central Rapides parish has produced a large plume of thin to
moderate smoke that had been mixed with clouds throughout the day as
it moved due N and now NNE. The plume currently extends in a 40km wide
plume (SW to NE) from central Winn parish to the Morehouse parish state
line with AR.
A fire just south of the W Amite/C Franklin county line, MS produced a
large plume of thin to moderate smoke that had been mixed with clouds
throughout the day as it moved due N across SW MS. The plume currently
extends due north from the fire to dense weather clouds north of
Issaquena county. The average width is about 25km.
A fire in SE Perry county, MS is producing smoke that has increased cloud
cover due to increased water nucleation from soot/heat from the fire,
so density is not truly known...though the cloud is moving N and NNE
across NE Perry, central Wayne into S Clarke county, MS. The average
width is about 20km wide.

Nebraska/Iowa:
Fires along the Missouri River in N Knox county, Burt and Washington
counties in NE and SW Woodbury county, IA have recently produced small
puffs/plumes of thin smoke that extend due south about 20 to 30km with
about 5km widths.

North Dakota:
A fire along the Ward/McHenry county line (just north of halfway along
the boundary) has produced puffs of moderate smoke that has diffused
into a larger plume of thin smoke that extends due north into extreme
SW Manitoba.

Hawaii:
Please see Volcanic Ash Advisory under WMO header FVXX21 KNES or at
www.ssd.noaa.gov/VAAC for volcanic ash information. Additional to that,
a large area of Volcanic fog (VOG) which consists of high amounts of
SO2 can be seen heading north under stronger southerly flow across the
Big Island from the Kilauea craters of Halema'uma'u and Pu'u'O'o east
of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea to the Pacific. Once at the coastal regions
the Vog begins to swirl around the north flanks of Mauna Kea into the
straits toward Maui. Remnant Vog from prior days west of the island
is also moving north to NW and is covering Maui, Lana'i, Molokai with
moderate to dense thickness. Thin vog can be seen currently over O'ahu
and extending SW to 20N160W and further out. Eventually this thinner
area will trek across Kauai and Ni'ihau over the next 12hrs.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
