DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z April 16, 2008

Alabama and Mississippi:

Light to moderate smoke plumes were associated with fires in Choctaw
County, AL, and Wayne and Jasper counties, MS.  A dense plume of smoke
emanated from a fire in Perry County, MS.  These plumes extended up to
110 km to the southwest.

Louisiana:

Moderate to dense smoke extended to the west of a fire in Rapides County.

Texas:

Moderate to dense smoke extended north from a series of fires in San
Augustine County.

Oklahoma:

Moderate to dense smoke extended north for 200 km from a fire in
McCurtain County.

Arkansas:

Moderate to dense smoke from fires in Pope and Johnson counties extended
north for 250 km and 100 km, respectively.

Missouri:

Light to moderate smoke extended 230 km north of a blaze in Taney County.

Kansas:

Two light-moderate plumes in south-central Kansas extended 235 km north.

New Mexico:

Light smoke extended 305 km to the northeast reaching the Texas border
from a blaze in Torrance County.  Farther south, dust from White Sands
also stretched to the northeast to the Texas border.

California:

Light to moderate smoke extended 80 km to the west of a blaze in Mariposa
County.
Utah and Nevada:

Dense dust covered the southern 2/3 of the state of Utah and was moving
south southwest.  Light dust was also detected in extreme southern Nevada
stretching into California.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
