DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z April 24, 2008

Florida:
Numerous fires are burning across the state. In southern Florida a fire
in central Sarasota county is emitting a light to moderately dense plume
of smoke southwest into the Gulf of Mexico. In southwest Broward county
a fire is producing only light smoke south into Miami-Dade. Two fire
in central Palm Beach county are emitting only light plumes of smoke
south into Broward county.
In the panhandle of Florida a fire in eastern Walton county is producing
a light plume of smoke south into the Gulf of Mexico.

Alabama:
A fire on the border of Telladega and Clay counties is producing a wide
plume of light smoke southwest into Coosa, Chilton, Shelby and reaching
into northern Autauga counties.

Wisconsin:
Two fires in the neighboring counties of Monroe and Juneau are producing
light smoke north into the counties of Clark, Jackson and Wood.

Arizona/New Mexico:
In northwest Greenlee county Arizona (near the town of Alpine and in the
Apache SitGreaves National Forest) a wildfire is producing a long plume
of light to moderately dense smoke that spreads east NE. Moderately dense
smoke moves into Catron county New Mexico with light smoke spreading into
Cibola and Socorro counties New Mexico about 180-200 km from the source.
In western Santa Cruz county Arizona a fire is emitting light smoke east
NE into Pima and Cochise counties.
A fire in western Torrance county New Mexico is emitting light smoke
east NE. Smoke is staying within county borders based on latest
satellite imagery.

Mississippi Valley/Upper and Lower Great Lakes/Ohio Valley/Northeast:
A moderate to dense band of unknown consistency in the upper levels of the
troposphere extends across much of the northern/northeast United States.
The area consists mainly of VOG from Hawaii and possibly mixed with
smoke from the numerous large fires across Eastern Russia/Siberia and
possible pollution/dust from east Asia. Currently, area covers the
following states: central/eastern Illinois, northern/central Indiana,
southeast Michigan, northern Ohio, Lake Erie and Ontario, continuing east
into northwest Pennsylvania, western New York and into the northeast US.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
